We decided to archive photos of Café onion on a digital platform (our website) so they can be accessed anytime, anywhere, and used in various contexts. By continually capturing onion’s transformations, I also hope that the sense of “coexistence of past and present,” which I felt at onion, can live on through these digital images.
Someday, when onion’s spaces have aged enough to be called “old,” I look forward to revisiting those changes together through the photos compiled online, and to experiencing onion’s deepened philosophy over the years.
Each of onion’s locations has its own distinct character:
The Seongsu branch occupies a former metal factory, reminiscent of the local industrial past.
The Mia branch is part of the Gangbuk Post Office building, which once connected the stories of the local community.
The Anguk branch resides in a traditional hanok (Korean house) that has stood for more than a century.
The Gwangjang Market branch utilizes a gold-and-silver shop imbued with 60 years of history.
By carefully preserving as much of each space’s legacy as possible and reimagining it with onion’s unique vision, onion breathes new life into these long-standing places. The most striking idea I sensed at onion was indeed the “coexistence of past and present.” Through its spaces, coffee, and baked goods, onion seems to share and enjoy that idea quite naturally with its visitors—perhaps onion itself is the medium that makes this coexistence possible.
Wandering through onion’s nooks and crannies, I discovered traces of time, different textures of materials, and various objects, all of which helped me experience onion’s philosophy on a deeper level. Observing how onion expands one branch at a time, it appears that onion isn’t simply focused on establishing a strong identity as a café, but rather on respecting each region’s history and the people who live there—crafting new stories for everyone who visits. That is my tentative definition.
This exhibition features photographs capturing moments where onion’s philosophy, spaces, and the people within come together in harmony.

또한, onion의 변화를 사진으로 담아가며 onion에게서 느꼈던 ‘과거와 현재의 공존’이라는 가치가 디지털 공간의 사진을 통해서도 이어지길 바라는 마음입니다.
언젠가 onion의 공간이 오랜 시간이 흘러 ‘옛것’으로 불리게 될 때, 디지털 공간에 모아 둔 사진을 통해 그 변화를 함께 돌아보고, 오랜 세월 속에서 더욱 깊어진 onion의 철학을 함께 향유할 수 있는 순간이 오리라 고대합니다.
onion의 각 지점별 공간은 저마다 특징을 갖추고 있는데
성수점은 금속 산업의 옛 흔적이 서려 있는 폐공장을,
미아점은 지역 주민들의 이야기를 이어주던 강북 우체국 건물의 일부를,
안국점은 한 세기를 훌쩍 넘긴 전통 한옥을,
광장시장점은 60년의 시간이 스며든 금은방을,
이처럼 onion은 각 공간이 긴 시간 동안 지녔을 세월의 흔적과 그 속에 묻어 있을 이야기들을 생각하며,
과거의 공간을 최대한 보존하되 , onion만의 고유한 철학을 통해 그 공간을 재형성합니다.
onion에서 가장 두드러지게 느껴졌던 철학은 과거와 현재의 공존(共存)입니다.
그것을 공간과 커피, 베이커리를 통해 자연스러이 소비자와 향유(享有)하는 듯 느껴졌고, onion은 그 매개의 역할을 해내는 것이 아닌지 생각해 봅니다.
또한 onion의 공간을 구석구석 돌아다니다 보면 긴 세월의 흔적들과 다양한 소재의 텍스처, 오브제를 발견할 수 있는데 그것을 통해 onion만의 철학을 한층 더 느낄 수 있었습니다.
이렇듯 onion은 한 지점, 한 지점 늘려갈 때 그 방향성을 바라보면, 카페로서만의 깊은 정체성을 가지는 것이 아니라 그 지역과 사람을 생각하고, 그 공간이 지나온 세월을 존중하며 만들어진 새로운 이야기를 onion을 찾아주시는 모든 분들에게 나누며 써 내려가는 것 아닌지, 조심스레 정의해 봅니다.
이번에 촬영한 사진들을 통해 onion만의 철학이 담긴 공간과 그 안에 있는 사람들의 모습 등, 그들이 조화롭게 어우러진 순간들을 담아 전시합니다
カフェ onon（オニオン）の写真をいつでもどこでも閲覧でき、かつ用途に応じて活用できるようにするため、デジタル空間（ウェブサイト）にアーカイブすることにしました。また、onion の移り変わりを写真に収めることで、私が感じてきた「過去と現在の共存」という価値が、このデジタル上の写真を通しても続いていけばという想いも込めています。
いつか onion の空間が長い時を経て「古いもの」と呼ばれるようになったとき、オンラインにまとめておいた写真を振り返りながら、その変化や、歳月を重ねていっそう深まった onion の考え方を共に味わえる日が来ることを願っています。
onion の各店舗は、それぞれ固有の特徴を持っています。
ソンス（성수）店は、金属産業の痕跡が感じられる旧工場跡地、
ミア（미아）店は、地域の人々の物語を繋いできた江北郵便局の一部、
アングク（안국）店は、一世紀以上の歴史をもつ伝統家屋（韓屋）、
クァンジャンシジャン（광장시장）店は、60年の歳月が染み込んだ金銀細工店、
をそれぞれ活用しています。
このように onion は、長い年月を積み重ねてきた空間の痕跡と、そこに秘められた物語を大切に想いながら、可能な限りその「過去の姿」を残しつつ、onion 独自のアプローチによって新たな形へと再構成しているのです。
onion で最も印象的だったのは「過去と現在の共存」という考えでした。それを空間やコーヒー、ベーカリーを通じて自然に来店者と“享有”しているように感じられ、onion がその媒介役を果たしているのではないかと思いました。
さらに店内を隅々まで歩き回ると、長い時を物語る痕跡や、さまざまな素材のテクスチャ、オブジェなどが目に入り、それを通じて onion の世界観をより深く感じることができました。
こうして店舗を少しずつ増やしていく中での方向性を見つめてみると、onion は単なるカフェとしてのアイデンティティを強めるのではなく、地域とそこに暮らす人々を想い、その場所が紡いできた年月を尊重しながら、新しい物語を訪れる人たちと一緒に綴っているのではないか、そう定義してみたくなります。
今回撮影した写真では、onion の価値観が詰まった空間とそこに集う人々、そしてそれらが調和する瞬間を捉え、展示いたします。

This website is designed for photo archiving, featuring a distinct layout unlike typical sites. We simplified various elements to focus on the core function of storing images, and organized them by each Onion location and theme, creating corresponding menus. By reducing main colors and complex graphics, we made the photos the true centerpiece, and adopted the intuitive and highly readable Inter font, ensuring a comfortable viewing experience.
Images are displayed prominently within each location- or theme-based category, accompanied by brief descriptions when necessary to clarify context. Notably, the gallery allows users to click on individual images to enlarge them, providing a streamlined user experience (UX) where anyone can focus on the photos without distraction.
Ultimately, this website fulfills its role as a “digital photo archive,” prioritizing the images and their stories over flashy design. Onion’s unique value of “coexistence between past and present” is also communicated more clearly through the menu and categorization system, guiding visitors to naturally immerse themselves in the stories of each branch and theme.
사진 보관을 위한 웹사이트로, 기존 웹사이트들과는 다른 구성을 지녔습니다. 웹사이트를 구성하는 여러 요소들을 빼내어 사진 보관의 기능에 충실하도록 했으며, 어니언의 지점별·주제별로 이미지를 분류해 메뉴를 설정했습니다. 또한 여러 디자인적 요소를 줄여 사진이 더 직관적으로 보여지도록 제작하였고, 가독성이 높은 Inter 폰트를 채용해 사용자가 편안하게 이미지를 탐색할 수 있도록 했습니다.
